Independent Journal Review (IJR), one of the largest news publishers in the world with 15+ million unique visitors each month, is a site dedicated to fair, creative, and shareable news. Traditionally, news and politics have been presented in a way that doesn’t lend itself to social sharing. We have helped change that. By connecting with our audience on a genuine level and building trust, we strive to foster a more informed and diverse community of opinion, using social connections to spread fair reporting delivered in a socially native fashion.
We are looking for a talented writer for IJR’s conservative vertical - IJR Red. The ideal candidate sees a lot of the media landscape today and says, “Americans deserve better than this.” They’re not interested in pushing an agenda to fit a bias; instead, they’re interested in giving a voice to people who feel that their voices aren’t heard. But when it comes to tackling hot-button issues in America, they don’t have an issue using evidence to express alternative viewpoints in a unique way.
If you’re applying for this job, you know that storytelling and audience building requires so much more than AP style and press releases. The right candidate is teachable, coachable and humble — but they’re fun too. They don’t want to report in the style of traditional media outlets.
The ideal candidate is willing to go the extra mile and the extra, extra mile to get a good story. They will stay on late because they understand the 24/7 nature of the national news cycle. They will make 30 phone calls to reach the right person. He or she is able to succeed in a fast-paced environment, is a self-starter, and isn’t afraid to speak up. Being a team player is essential. They are dedicated and value their integrity.
This is a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C.-area office; the position MAY include relocation for the right candidate.
